This Piper Vagabond was built in Lockhaven, USA, in 1948. When the war ended in 1945, Piper had a large stock of Cub parts left over, but no customers for the fairly slow tandem seat trainer aircraft. Within 6 months Piper had created the Vagabond, with clipped wings giving more speed, and side-by-side seating making it more sociable, but basically using up the Cub tail, wings, and other parts. The Vagabond is considered the aircraft that saved Piper from bankruptcy.
400 Vagabonds were built (compared to about 22,000 Cubs). G-AWOF started life as a PA15, but was soon upgraded to a PA17.
